Healthy food and budget talk at Bar Harbor library - Bangor Daily News

BAR HARBOR — The Jesup Memorial Library will hold a healthy food talk at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at 34 Mt. Desert Street. Jenny Jones, executive director of the Bar Harbor Food Pantry, and Mary Parham, community health educator at the MDI Hospital, will talk about the challenges of maintaining a healthy diet will on a budget in the MDI area.

The two will talk about healthy eating and food insecurity and share some tips and tricks people can use to eat healthier food on a budget. Parham will also discuss some of the food and healthy eating programs she offers to members of the community. Jones will speak about food insecurity in the community and will talk about what the pantry is doing to create access to healthier food and eliminate barriers that people in the MDI community face when trying to access this food.

This talk is happening during the Hancock County Food Drive which is a month-long food collection and fundraising project that happens annually in March and directly supports 17 food pantries, free community meals and school backpack programs across the county. The food drive was started in 2012 to address the high rate of food insecurity the community faces during later winter and early spring. Members of the Hancock County Food Security Network work together throughout the month of March to raise funds and collect food.

For information on the talk contact the Jesup at 207-288-4245 or mrice@jesuplibrary.org.
