Bill would allow millions of dollars to create healthy food access - KBJR 6

ST. PAUL, MN — Millions of dollars could be on the way to help Minnesota communities in need of better access to healthy food.

A bill is making its way through the state legislature that, if approved, would add $2.5 million to the Good Food Access Fund.

That fund was created four years ago.

Since then, it has contained $250,000 each year for requests, like enhanced grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and fresh food refrigeration.

But already this year, requests have totaled more than a million dollars.

On Tuesday, the St. Louis County board unanimously supported this legislation.

They pointed to the Cook community losing Zup’s in a fire last November as a real-life example of how big an impact grocery stores can have on small communities.
