“Healthy food should be affordable” – President

President of the Republic of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca stated that if healthy food is as expensive the vulnerable will be restricted from accessing it, hence injustices and inequalities will prevail in our society. She said this while quoting research that revealed that there is an alarming gap between what food professionals promote as healthy and nutrition food, and the perceptions of the general public

In a conference named “Food rights, Privilege and Security: Perception vs Reality”, the President said that the theme of food is very complex, especially since it is constantly changes because of agricultural advancements and discussions on public health.

The research quoted was undertaken by Professor Angela Abela and Professor Carmel Borg, and tackles the topic of high healthy food prices.

In the President’s words, healthy food is a basic human right and every one should be given access to healthy food produced in a sustainable manner.

She emphasised the values of food justice, including methods responsible growing and distributing food. Coleiro Preca also emphasised that the international community should ensure that no one is deprived of healthy nutrition.

The President also referred to other research conducted by Caritas Malta two years ago, which reported that food constitutes the highest expenditure being incurred by families of 4 members, in Malta and Gozo.
