5 healthy food delivery options from NYC restaurants - New York Post

The world may be in disarray, but your diet doesn’t have to be. Several restaurants around town are debuting healthier options during the coronavirus lockdown.

“At a time when the temptation to overeat can be strong, [it’s important to] fuel your mind and body” at every meal, Mary Jane Detroyer, a registered dietitian based in Manhattan, tells The Post. Here, we round up five delicious, nutritionist-approved delivery picks in NYC.

This Upper East Side spot may be known for its steaks and thin-crust pizzas, but chef Segundo Pelaez’s new to-go menu is surprisingly health-conscious.

“I don’t use butter in anything,” says Pelaez, whose dishes get flavor from “simple seasonings, light dressings, good produce and grilling and baking protein in a way that keeps it moist.”

The T-Bar chopped salad, for example, comes with romaine, hearts of palm, green beans and a choice of grilled salmon or chicken or cold shrimp (from $18). Amanda Foti, founder of the online nutrition-coaching program Eat Fit Live, says any of those add-ons works: “The proteins are mostly lean, so you can add more dressing to the salad for extra fat and taste.”

More smart picks: a kale cauliflower salad with grapes and a chili lime vinaigrette ($18), grilled octopus with olives and potatoes ($21), tuna tartare ($24) and vegetable and lentil soups.

Beyond Sushi

You have to order at least six items from vegan chain Beyond Sushi’s heat-and-serve entrees ($16 each), which launched earlier this month. But they’re a good lockdown investment, as they’ll last seven days in the fridge and are loaded with protein, fiber and vegetables.

“We wanted to make it convenient to eat well,” says chef and owner Guy Vaknin. “All you have to do is microwave the meals for two to three minutes, and enjoy. Everything is nutrient dense and will keep you sated.”

His 10-item menu includes a five-spice tofu stir-fry on a bed of sweet potato glass noodles, grilled chipotle seitan with roasted butternut squash and beluga lentils and an Impossible meatloaf with red wine shiitake sauce. There are also some less-typical offerings, such as BBQ grilled jackfruit with chickpeas and black rice pilaf.

Plus, it’s not too austere. Every dish comes with a carby side: taro chips, pita or rosemary garlic bread.

Ravagh Persian Grill

A favorite of the fashion set, the Persian chain Ravagh wins points in the healthy-eating department. Its diet-friendly items include fresh, oversize salads like the Mediterranean chopped, with crisp romaine, steak tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and feta cheese (from $8.50), and the baby arugula with cherry tomatoes (from $8.50). (Order them with the addictive lemon dressing.) Entree-wise, the char-grilled chicken breast (from $15) and salmon kebab platters (from $17) come with a pile of grilled veggies and are large enough to share. Missing seafood? Their whole grilled branzino ($27) is soft on the inside with a beautiful crispy skin.

“These are my family recipes and the food I’ve eaten all my life,” says co-owner Hana Saber-Tehrani. “We don’t use butter, and the only item we deep-fry is the french fries.”

Russel Jackson

Between the tasting menu and wine pairings, it’s easy to blow hundreds of dollars in a single meal at chef-and-owner Russell Jackson’s fancy Harlem spot. So his new bento boxes — which pack in three delicious courses — are a steal at $39.95 apiece (plus a $10 environmental packaging fee), and can make another night at home feel more like a date night or special occasion. Even better, the California-inspired fare is surprisingly good for you.

“My palate prefers light, clean cuisine,” says Jackson, who keeps the oil, salt, butter and sugar to a minimum. The boxes change every week, but previous offerings have included a roasted beet and fennel salad with grape dressing; chicken with potatoes, king trumpet mushrooms, cipollini onions and salsa verde; and a spiced ginger almond cake.

Honeybrains

Health is the name of the game at Honeybrains, where every recipe is vetted by a nutritionist and neurologist. Executive chef Steven Mettle’s new family-style menu feeds either four or eight people, and prioritizes healthy food groups, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes and foods high in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Choose your proteins (from $24 each) and sides (from $10 each), which include herb-seasoned sweet potatoes and mashed avocado and greens. Then top off your order with some zesty dressing, such as honey basil or red curry, and voilà: “Everyone in the family can make their favorite,” says Mettle.

Angelo’s Pizza

When the family’s craving pizza but you need to eat like a healthy human, try Angelo’s. Its takeout menu has surprisingly diet-friendly options.

“My wife is very careful with what she eats, and she always orders the chicken and salads at Angelos,” says co-owner Nick Tsoulus.

Good picks include grilled calamari with flavorful herbs, any of the menu’s hearty salads and a tender grilled chicken with rosemary. Go crazy on vegetable sides, such as escarole and artichokes — Tsoulus promises they aren’t laden in oil.
