Recess, the “healthy-ish” food stall from the Castellucci Hospitality Group (Bar Mercado, Cooks & Soldiers, Double Zero), opened last week at Krog Street Market in the space formerly occupied by local butcher shop Spotted Trotter. If crowds are any indication of success, the stall may already be filling an unconscious need for market-goers seeking lighter yet filling food options than what is currently available in the hall.
Chef Victoria Shore (Cooks & Soldiers, Double Zero, Bar Mercado) heads the kitchen at Recess which focuses on a vegetable-heavy menu with a handful of meat and seafood options. Think fancy toasts such as avocado or broccoli with smoke ricotta, grain bowls with barley, lentils, and quinoa, a shiitake and crimini mushroom patty with Swiss cheese on rye bread, or a chicken sandwich on multigrain bread with hummus, walnut-raisin pesto, and butternut squash.
Like the food, beverages at Recess take a lighter approach and include wine, a tiny beer list, and four cocktails which err on the healthier side using ingredients like coconut water and fresh juices in place of heavier syrups or sugars. A selection of non-alcoholic drinks such as smoothies, shakes, tonics, and dtox juices are also on the menu.
Recess is open for lunch and dinner Sunday - Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Weekend breakfast is available on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
