A Restaurant From South Bend, Indiana Wants to Bring Healthy Food to Culver City

After taking over the space that housed Native Foods, Primal Kitchen looks ready to open in September in Culver City. Their original South Bend, Indiana restaurant opened last month, with plans for openings in West Valley, Santa Cruz, Sacramento, Portland, and Anchorage.

Co-owners and siblings Kyle and Devin Sisson created choices for those that want a fast and healthy meal. Primal Kitchen’s location choice seems fortuitous, as this area of Downtown Culver City has been a destination for healthy restaurants. Tender Greens started here in 2006. The area also contained the now-shuttered LYFE Kitchen and the vegan Native Foods, which closed in 2016.

“We’re doing organic local food, basically just as high quality food we can get our hands on. And we’re excited to bring that to Culver City,” says Kyle Sisson.

He’s excited about the food, but is also aware of a local need for coffee and tea. The area is lacking in caffeinated store options, with the exception of Starbucks. “A lot of people wouldn’t guess, but we are doing great coffee drinks with MCT oil (a bulletproof coffee addition) and ghee and nectars. It’s clean stuff, no sugar, and only sweetened with honey.”

Primal Kitchen’s food menu is similar to their first South Bend location, but will be tweaking a few things. “The menu is still evolving. We’ll be serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You really don’t see a lot of breakfast places in Culver City. And no place does a clean breakfast, leaving you fueled, rather than weighed down by sugar or heavy things people eat for breakfast.”

One of their breakfast items is chicken & waffles, where the waffle is a grain-free, with baked chicken. Nothing on the menu is fried. Lunch and dinner showcase appetizers, soups, salads, create-your-own bowls, burgers, and a bison tenderloin served with a parsnip bone marrow mash. Paleo-diet fans will find many options at Primal Kitchen.

Kyle’s father, Mark Sisson created the concept with his partner, Mario Altiery. Mark Sisson has been in the health industry for over 20 years.
