Mom’s Self-Serve Healthy Snacks Idea Has Gone Viral | Moms.com - Moms.com

This mom’s healthy self-serve snack system has gone viral, and we don’t know how we didn’t come up with it ourselves. With everyone in lockdown, parents are constantly trying to figure out how to keep their kids fed and healthy. We all want to get our kids to eat healthier snacks, and perhaps this hack will help with that goal at home.

During the lockdown, we’re spending more and more time at home. We have begun to be thankful for the time we get to spend with family, but we’re also realizing a lot of our shortcomings when it comes to things in the house. Ensuring that your kids don’t just eat potato chips and chocolate for snacks is important, but many need help in figuring out how to do this.

Sarah Hornung, a school administrator, shared her Sunday food prep hack for snacks online, and parents have been shaking their heads and asking themselves how they didn’t come up with this before. After grocery shopping, the mom washes and preps all of the food she considers “self-serve.” These include baby carrots, grapes, and cucumbers, among others. She knows if she leaves the carrots, for example, in the bag, then the kids are less likely to eat them because it takes effort to prepare. Hornung puts all of the prepared snacks in containers in the shelf of the fridge door so anyone can just grab something if they’re feeling peckish.

Her method went viral, and the post has been shared over 114,000 times on Facebook. Hornung believes that the post was so well-received because parents can relate to the struggle of getting your kids to snack on healthy food. Since then, parents have been inspired to put prepped snacks in quart containers in an attempt to get everyone in the house (including themselves) to snack on healthier items of food.

Hornung reminds parents, however, that this hack won’t work for all kids. Just because her post went viral does not mean it was the holy grail solution for the issue. She even points out that her kids aren’t “perfect angels” who only eat healthy foods; this method simply encouraged them to reach for something other than junk food.
