Submitted by: Whatcom County Executive’s Office

Wondering what’s up with accessing healthy food during the Stay Home, Stay Healthy order for Washington? We’ve got an overview here for you.

Grocery stores are essential businesses and will stay open

Under the Governor’s order, we recommend that you shop once a week and buy the same amount of food that you normally would. Don’t overbuy, leave enough for your neighbors. Here are some tips to stay safe while grocery shopping:

  • Make every effort to keep six feet between yourself and others in the store
  • Some stores are also reserving times for people who are older, pregnant, or have health conditions to shop. Check your local grocery store for more information.
  • Carry hand sanitizer or disinfecting wipes with you, and clean off any items you bring home with you before you use them

Food banks are also staying open

Food banks in our community are still open for folks who need some additional assistance accessing healthy food. All food banks are taking distancing recommendations into consideration.

Find the latest on Whatcom Food Bank Resources from the Opportunity Council. To get the most up-to-date information about the services for the food bank nearest you, we suggest you contact your food bank directly.
