Healthy food, helping needy at the heart of chef's new eatery in Ross - TribLIVE

Veteran Pittsburgh chef Kevin Watson has launched his latest venture in Ross Township — Chef’s Table, which he dubs as the area’s “first restaurant with a heart.”

Chef’s Table combines Watson’s generational African-American cooking traditions, love of herbs and spices, and influences from cuisines around the world to create healthy, made-to-order meals.

But Watson’s new restaurant is beyond just serving up fresh, expertly prepared meals.

Watson, who was inspired by his grandmother to become a chef, wants to follow in her footsteps by giving back to those in need.

“Sadly, too many of Pittsburgh’s senior citizens are not getting the food they deserve,” Watson wrote in a news release announcing the opening of Chef’s Table. “Together as a community we can change that by providing Pittsburgh’s local home-bound seniors with healthy, nutritious meals. “

To do that, diners can participate in his “Buy a Meal, Give a Meal” initiative. The first place where the funds raised from the program will be used is the senior high rise in Northview Heights.

Watson also is preparing to launch a meal service offering a healthy alternative to pre-packaged foods.

Beginning in March, Chef’s Table will offer prepared meals that can be reheated at home.

“This service is perfect for athletes, people with health issues, individuals on weight loss programs and busy professionals who are more interested in eating all-natural prepared meals at home instead of frozen, processed foods,” Watson said.

A native of western Pennsylvania, Watson is a 1994 graduate of the former Pennsylvania Culinary Institute. He spent 11 years teaching at Le Cordon Bleu Institute and served as executive chef at the Savoy as well as The Cafe at the Frick.

He also has served as the personal chef for several Pittsburgh Steelers players, including Jerome Bettis and Alan Faneca.

Chef’s Table is located at 2193 Babcock Boulevard.
