View from the Tractor Seat: Making your own healthy food or buying local - The Daily News Online

The view this month from the Tractor Seat is looking at the food chain and a way to help people shorten up the length from where food is grown to the consumer.

My whole idea of good wholesome food is much different than the American public.

I am blessed with a wife of 52 years that understands food from a farmers outlook.

This is a great time of the year to help educate your children and grand children about food — some people eat to live ... but I live to eat.

Lots of home grown fruits and vegetables are available now.

One of my favorites is home-made lasagna made with fresh tomatoes for the sauce and home made ricotta made from whole milk which is very simple to make. All you need is a thermometer a gallon of milk from the store and lemon juice or vinegar. You can also, as my wife does, make your own fresh mozzarella cheese the same way. It is so much fun and so easy just have your children or grand children help you, and everyone will enjoy the adventure of making awesome great food in your own kitchen.

If you don’t grow your own, which we do, please get what you need at your local farm stand or your local farmers market and almost anywhere you live there is one near you.

Food is a necessity, but we can make it in to fun adventure three times a day — we are blessed we make our own yogurt and stir in fresh honey from our bees every morning. What can taste better and be healthier than that?

We are too many generations from the farm to fully realize what we don’t know about the food we eat and feed our families. Let’s all try to find out all we can about the food chain and really how long it is back to the farms it starts at.

Little things like making some soft cheese and educating ourselves and our families will go a long ways to a much healthier life stile for all of us. There is books on cheese making, and Youtube and Google have a lot of videos on cheese and yogurt making. Fresh yogurt and fresh home grown peaches make a healthy breakfast or snack.

So if you make food an adventure instead of a necessity, you and your family can be heathier and start to understand the food chain much better.

Thanx For Readen,
