Pantry Plus Program partners with Mon Health to provide patients with healthy food

MORGANTOWN W.Va -
Pantry Plus More has partnered with Mon Health, Wedgewood Family Clinics, and the Mountaineer Food Bank to make healthy food options easily accessible to patients in need.

"What our goal is, is to not only allow for access to food for people in need, but also give them good , healthy, choices, as well as the support they need to do their own food prep, which empowers them to make good food choices long term," said Brandon Byron, physician at Mon Health Wedgewood Family Clinic.

Doctors at Mon Health will refer nutrient-deficient patients to the program, and these patients will receive a voucher.

The clients will be presented with a box of healthy food that lasts for at least a week.

"We get roughly seventy five of these boxes every second Thursday, and then not only, as you'll see, we also get fresh produce.  This time, we've got cauliflower, apples, and onions.  We've had a lot of different things, plums.  So that way the people can also have fresh produce," said Tom Bloom,

This program ensures that patients are not eating processed foods.

"A lot of times, the easier stuff to make and to cook, are things that are unhealthy, and it's a lot of times cheaper, so anytime that we can get fresh produce, fresh fruit, things like that, into people's homes and into their diets, I think that's always a good thing," said Sizemore.

Clients will also learn how to make healthy meals with the food they receive.

"There's also a component of education to it, too.  So, they are getting recipes on how to use those boxes in healthy ways, how to make them last longer.  So there's like a nutrition and education component also that we think is really important," said Sizemore.

Food is available for pickup every second Thursday of the month at the pantry plus location on Rousch Drive. Clients can see their physician at Mon Health Wedgewood Primary care to receive a voucher.
