Community center hopes to address limited access to healthy food

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A new community outreach center officially opened along Anthony Boulevard in east central Fort Wayne.

The Shepherd's Hand Community Outreach Center held its grand opening Sunday afternoon.

The center is located in the building formally known as the Elite Ballroom, next to Shepherd of the City Lutheran Church.

Shepherd's Hand plans to serve as a ministry to address health, education and life wellness. They've already begun to offer an after school homework club and healthy cooking classes.

"Our zip code here around Shepherd's Hand, 46803, is one of many food desserts in Allen County," said Shepherd's Hand director Rachel Jaseph. "And so that was the impetus for wanting to be able to offer the healthy eating active living classes so that we can give people that knowledge, especially in a place where healthy foods are not promoted or even available."

The after school homework club is held Tuesday afternoons. The cooking classes are held Thursday evenings. You can learn more about the center by following this link.
