Fresh food season is arriving, and with it farm-fresh fundraisers! Several organizations in the area help make healthy food affordable for community members, and this week’s Savor the Finger Lakes combines beer, cider, and local cuisine to support Healthy Food for All.
This Friday, April 20th in the Baker Atrium at Cornell’s Physical Sciences Building, the annual event offers an opportunity to taste craft beers, ciders, wines, and spirits from around the area, as well as food pairings from local restaurants and food producers, with dozens of vendors.
A VIP ticket will give attendees an extra hour at the event, with passed hors d’oeuvres prepared by Cornell Catering, exclusive beverage tastings, and an opportunity for a guided pairing with certified sommelier Laura Falk from Experience the Finger Lakes.
The Healthy Food for All program helps make CSA farm shares available to community members who otherwise couldn’t afford fresh produce, and provides free cooking classes and food preservation workshops to make it easier for limited-income community members to feed their families healthy food year-round.
The organization says it costs about $600 to provide year-round access to fresh, local produce for a single family, or about $15 to provide a week’s worth of fresh produce. Family farms receive a fair price for the food they produce, and about $70,000 is invested in the local agricultural economy each year through the program.
Food at Friday’s event is being provided by Cornell Catering, along with local producers Wide Awake Bakery, the Piggery, F. Oliver’s, Emmy’s Organics, East Hill Creamery, Crosswinds Farm & Creamery, and Cayuga Medical Center.
Beverages are from Bet the Farm Winery, Damiani, Osmote Wine, Shepherdess Cellars, Honeoye Falls Distillery, Krooked Tusker Distillery, Last Shot Distillery, Bacchus Brewing Company, Bluestone Brewing Co., Good Nature Farm Brewery, Ithaca Beer Co., Liquid State Brewing Company, LyonSmith Brewing, Seneca Lodge Craft Brewing, Silver Lake Brewing Project, Bellwether Hard Cider and Wine Cellars, Kite & String Cider, Finger Lakes Cider House, Rootstock Ciderworks and Apple Country Spirits, and South Hill Cider.
Tickets are available at healthyfoodforall.org or at the door for Friday’s event. General admission from 5:30-7:30pm is $35 or $25 for students in advance, and VIP admission at $45 offers an extra hour from 4:30-5:30pm. Tickets purchased at the door, if available, will cost $10 extra.
