Besides being a heart-healthy food, blueberries could play a role in cancer treatment

COLUMBIA, Missouri (WTHR) - A tasty snack, blueberries are probably already a part of your heart-healthy diet. Now researchers say they can play a role in the fight against cervical cancer.

Blueberry extract has been found to make radiation treatment more effective, according to research underway at the University of Missouri.

A team led by Dr. Yujiang Fang at Missouri’s School of Medicine made the discovery.

"We reduce the dosage of radiation, but the killing effect on cancers is not reduced, and it's even enhanced," Fang said.

He said a chemical in the fruit acts as a “radiosensitizer”. Resveratrol makes cancer cells more sensitive to treatment, according to the study. Therefore, less radiation being used could create fewer side effects to healthy cells.

The research group is adding other foods to the study in the search for similar benefits.

"Pineapple extract, watermelon extract, apple peel extract, and we also do the pumpkin extract,” said Yang.

Besides adding new fruits and vegetables to the research, they’ll eventually add the testing to other cancers.
