Show up with an empty stomach and full wallet: The “Vannas” are coming – and they’re bringing pie.
“You know, like Vanna White,” Lainie Koch, Food Roots’ Office Administrator, said with a smile. The Fourth Annual South County Pie Auction and all-you-can-eat Pie Feast (with ice cream) is coming March 24 and the “Vannas” are set to start the show as they parade the 30 or so auction pies from south county citizens and business owners to be bid on.
“It takes about an hour and it’s very lively,” Koch said, noting both sweet and savory pies will be available. “It’s followed by an all-you-can-eat pie and ice cream feast, so you have nothing to lose.”
Funds from the event benefit Food Roots, Neskowin and Pacific City farmers markets and the South County Food Pantry – half goes toward Food Roots and the remaining half is divided equally among the remaining organizations.
“The first year, the pantry received a check in the thousands [of dollars], it made such a huge difference,” Koch said, “It was probably the largest chunk of money they had in any one moment.”
Both South County farmers markets operate on a very small budget, she added.
The Pacific City event, held at the Kiawanda Community Center (Koch added KCC has been very supportive every year), is an off-shoot of the original Pie Day in Nehalem. Four years ago, a Food Roots board member had the idea to introduce a version of it to South County – and add something new: offer beer and wine.
“The whole community has rallied behind it,” Koch said. “Different factions of the whole community coming to this event is really heartwarming. It’s just wonderful to see.”
The 2017 Pie Auction and Feast raised more than $12,000 – a figure Koch said they are planning to beat this year.
New this year is live music through the event, provided by Donna Jose. But the fun – and pie – will remain the same.
“They’re just outrageous pies,” Koch said, scrolling through pictures of last year’s event, “Someone made this pie – it looks like roses but is made of applies – it was just gorgeous.”
The Fourth Annual South County Pie Auction and all-you-can-eat Pie Feast is 6:30 – 9 p.m. (auction begins at 7 p.m.) March 24 at the Kiawanda Community Center (34600 Cape Kiwanda Dr., Pacific City). The event has a $10 entry, $5 for children 12 years old and younger. For more information, to volunteer or to bake a feast pie, contact Food Roots at 503-815-2800.
