Healthy food keeps kidneys in good condition: expert

The prevalence of kidney disease is increasing the world over and this is attributed to the growing incidence of diabetes and hypertension, says T. Ravi Raju, nephrologist and former Vice-Chancellor of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences.

In addition to these two, there are some unexplained causes like obesity as a result of change in food habits and eating junk food. Excessive nourishment leading to obesity is also a kind of malnourishment. It leads to various problems including kidney disease.

The other causes of kidney disease include indiscriminate use of medicines and excessive use of tobacco.

CKD hotspots

Nicaragua in South America, Egypt, Sri Lanka and India (Srikakulam district) are identified as Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) hotspots of the world.

Earlier, CKD was also prevalent in the Balkan countries like croatia. Fortunately, the cause of CKD in the Balkan countries was found to be due to aristolochic acid contamination due to the use of herbal medicine used for slimming purpose, says Dr. Ravi Raju. As the cause was found out, CKD was eradicated from those countries.

CKD in Srikakulam (India) and in Sri Lanka was seen more in people from the lower economic strata and agriculture workers.

The cause of CKD in the four above-mentioned countries has not been detected till date.

These hotspots were identified as CKDU (CKD of Unknown Etiology). The prevalence of CKDU is also increasing.

The objective of World Kidney Day, being observed on March 9, is to create awareness about kidney diseases and the need to have healthy food habits and a better lifestyle.

The need to promote organ donation of brain-dead patients by motivating their relatives and creating awareness among the general public is another objective. Patient suffering with end-stage kidney disease as also heart, liver and other problems can get a new lease of life through organ transplantation, says Dr. Ravi Raju.
