Cafe Coteau inside Children's Museum of South Dakota offers healthy food options

BROOKINGS, S.D. - In this week's edition of Monday Munchies, the chef at Cafe Coteau shows some of the fresh dishes she serves at the Children's Museum of South Dakota in Brookings. The chef, Pouran Borchardt, makes all of the items on the menu with the freshest ingredients. The museum has a garden outside of its doors seasonally where the vegetables grow that she uses in her dishes. She said using fresh ingredients is so important to her because she is feeding young children and wants the best, nutritional things for them. She uses the Farmer's Market right outside of the museum's doors to get other fresh fruits and vegetables.

The cafe serves coffee from local roasters in Brookings and even serves SDSU ice cream. The cafe offers a wide variety of food that you wouldn't expect at a museum, like pasta, salad, sandwiches and even breakfast items.

Borchardt does special Persian nights a couple times per year. It's a reservation only event where she cooks several different dishes inspired by the Persian culture. She will also hold a brunch at the cafe on Mother's Day that is reservations only. She is originally from Iran and moved to Brookings when she was 15 years old.

Through May, the cafe will have a pasta buffet for lunch as well. She said she offers salad and a variety of pastas. Many people love Borchardt's cooking so much, she said they make a stop if they're just passing through Brookings and live out of town. The cafe is open to the public and you do not have to have pay for admission to the museum in order to eat there.
