Organic, healthy food on the menu at KitchenFresh in Murfreesboro

CLOSE

Murfreesboro is seeing an influx of new eateries Nancy DeGennaro

Healthy, organic food served up quick is what you'll get at KitchenFresh, a newly opened fast-casual restaurant in Fountains at Gateway in Murfreesboro.

The concept designed by business partners Asmir Pervan and Brandon Whitsett, who both have a penchant for healthy eating and a desire to dine quickly.

"We travel a lot and everywhere we go, the first thing we do is Google healthy options," Whitsett said. "We felt Murfreesboro has healthy options, but not quick options. You're always having to sit down, have a server, look through a menu. People don't have time to do that these days."

Whitsett said when he and Pervan began to develop the concept, they did "a lot of research" to procure the best products. For instance, ahi tuna is delivered daily. Everything is organic, including the cold-pressed juice, and prepared fresh.

Chef Kevin Edmondson, a former Atlanta restaurateur, worked closely with Whitsett and Pervan to develop a menu.

Whitsett said KitchenFresh is truly "a first of its kind in Middle Tennessee."

With KitchenFresh, the menu items are visible on a serving and you pick what you want. The hardest and slowest part may be deciding what you want. If you're unsure, just ask for a small sample.

And once the weather warms, KitchenFresh will roll up its glass doors that open to a courtyard where there will be live music at various times throughout the summer.

How it works

Items are served in bowls. You can choose from a four-bowl, six-bowl or a veggie bowl that has four total items.

The four-bowl lets you choose from two bases, one veggie and one protein. The six-bowl allows for two bases, two veggies and two proteins.

Bases include zesty kale salad, sweet pepper quinoa (similar to rice and barley), cauliflower mash, coconut sweet potato mash, sweet potato noodles and brown rice. Many of those options are gluten-free as well as vegan.

For veggies, choose from sriracha cauliflower, agave balsamic Brussels sprouts, sesame garlic haricot verts (a type of green bean), Parmesan broccoli, agave glazed carrots, roasted butternut squash, and grilled zucchini and squash.

Proteins on the menu are pesto chicken , baked almond chicken, wacky teriyaki tofu, barbecue chicken — or choose herb marinated steak or poke ahi tuna for an upcharge of $1.50.

Once you pick the basics, then choose from flavorful sauces. Those include cucumber jalapeno, creamy ginger, curry sauce, sriracha coconut and balsamic vinny. Top it off with Parmesan cheese, or you can choose from basil tomatoes, guacamole and feta cheese for an upcharge of $1.50 for each.

Cold-pressed juices are prepared each morning, with each blended for different reasons. There's The Hulk, to protect and strengthen; The Pharmacist, an immune-booster; The Volunteer, an anti-inflammatory; and The Blue Raider, which is a brain booster. Other drinks include sparkling or flavored water and bottled craft sodas and water.

Need something sweet? Try the avocado brownie.

While your children may not be game for trying one of the bowls, they can choose from organic grilled cheese, organic hazelnut spread and banana and organic peanut butter and jelly.

Price points

Veggie bowls are $7.50, four-bowls are $9.95 and a six-bowl is $11.95. Kid meals are $5.95. The cold-pressed juices are $7.50 each, but are made with all organic produce. Drinks and the sweet treat are all less than $3.
