While it is a common sight in the city to see people run to be healthy, on Sunday the citizens taking part in 5K Smart Run had one thing in their mind - promote healthy food and lifestyle.

Over 3,500 Bengalureans participated in the run organised by the Department of Agriculture to encourage people to start using millets and organic food.

The run which started from Cubbon Park had a warm-up Zumba session by nutritionist and fitness instructor Nikita Suresh.

Agriculture Minister Krishna Byre Gowda and Mayor Sampath Raj flagged off the run. Dr C N Manjunath, Director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, T Suneel Kumar, City Police Commissioner and G Satish, Agriculture Commissioner were present.

Earlier, children used to bring parents for treatments. But now the role has been reversed. Parents are bringing their middle-aged children for treatment. There is a need to change our food intake considering our lifestyle," said Dr Manjunath.

"India is the largest producer of millets in the world. This is a great opportunity for citizens, healthcare professionals, farmers, and other stakeholders to invest in healthy, happy future of the country," Manjunath added.

The department will organise a special trade and citizen's fair 'International Organic and Millet Trade Fair 2018' from January 19 to 21. In the event, the organic farmers will be felicitated with a national award. Organic product processors, manufacturers of farm equipment and others will showcase their products and expertise in organic and millet-related areas.
