- Also commended for their menus are JetBlue, Alaska Air and Air Canada
- But coming bottom of the table of 12 US/Canadian airlines iss Hawaiian Airlines
- One of the main meals it serves contains a whopping 1,480 calories
A diet expert has some food for thought for flyers - which airlines offer the best and worst food.
Every year Dr Charles Platkin, a lecturer at the City University of New York School of Public Health, investigates the nutritional value of snacks and meals offered by 12 US and Canadian carriers and provides a calorie breakdown of what's available.
And this year's results are out, with the food served on Delta and Virgin America flights rated the best.

The 2017 Annual Airline Food Investigation published on dietdetective.com rates both airlines four out of five.
Dr Platkin praises Delta and Virgin America for not only offering healthy snacks and meals but also being very forthcoming with the nutritional information about all of their items.
The average calories overall (including meals, snack boxes and individual snacks) on a Delta flight is 480, while on Virgin America it is only 340.
Other airlines to rank highly include Air Canada and Jet Blue, who both score 3.75 stars and Alaska Air, which has been handed 3.5 stars.
Delta Air Lines, pictured, is rated as having the healthiest choices along with Virgin America
However, coming 10th and 11th is Allegiant Air and Spirit Airlines who earn 1.75 stars, while rock bottom is Hawaiian Airlines, which has just one star and gets Dr Platkin's 'Shame on You' award.
According to Dr Platkin the average calorie count on Hawaiian Airlines is 568 and he added that the carrier was not very forthcoming with calorie information.
He found that a meal served on a flight from New York to Honolulu that consisted of penne pasta with mushrooms, beef meatballs, marinara sauce, grated parmesan cheese, mixed bean salad and a sweet treat contained a total of 1,480 calories.
Dr Platkin found one meal served on Hawaiian Airlines contained over 1,400 calories, more than two Big Macs
Eating two Big Macs would pile on fewer calories as they have 550 each.
He said: 'Hawaiian Airlines’ food is high in calories and the menu doesn’t offer much choice either in terms of health.'
While much of the report makes for unappetizing reading, Dr Platkin praises airlines for axing oversized packages of snack foods in favour of smaller versions or eliminating them all together.
MailOnline has contacted Hawaiian Airlines, Allegiant Air and Spirit Airlines for comment.
