Food for Thought distributes nearly 250000 meals in 2017

Wyoming Food for Thought Project, a local grassroots food sovereignty organization dedicated to creating equitable food access for everyone, reports that in 2017 they distributed nearly 250,000 meals to children in  Natrona County.
The exact number of meals is 243,720, according to a press release by executive director Jamie Purcell.
The release continues:
Purcell, along with co-director Cassandra Baker, as well as 4 AmeriCorps VISTAs and an army of hundreds of volunteers, works year-round to meet the immediate need of childhood hunger in Natrona County.
Purcell and Baker have been leading the charge for the past 5 years to create sustainable systemic changes to the local food system that support direct, dignified, and year-round access to healthy food for everyone in our community.
“We began with the immediate need of feeding food insecure children when they are away from the safety net of school by providing free, confidential food bags to any child who needs one. This process is done in a dignified manner, and we strive to give children the best, most appropriate, and healthiest food we can in a way that serves their needs,” stated Purcell.
The immediate need of food insecurity and the secondary need of good and healthy food led Wyoming Food for Thought Project to implement two more pillars to their local solution for hunger.
Today Wyoming Food for Thought Project’s 3 pillars to Provide, Educate, and Empower our community exist in a number of programs centered on providing immediate assistance, empowering our community through dignified access to food, and educating individuals on how to access food through gardening, preserving, and advocating.  These programs include the weekend food bag program, free summer meals for kids, community dinners, community gardens, little free pantry, farmer’s markets, and workshops on all things related to seeds, growing, and preservation (seed-to-jar).
