Baby's health inspired new owner of Marketplace Café

A father’s experience watching his daughter struggle with health issues in a neonatal intensive care unit inspired him to think more about his family’s health and nutrition.

Jacob and Debbie Holycross, with their children Juniper and Ruby, are the new owners of the Marketplace Café, inside the 130 S. Main St. Marketplace.

In doing so, 24-year-old Jacob Holycross decided he wanted to share what he had learned with others through a healthy restaurant.

“Junie was born at the University of Cincinnati and spent over a month in the NICU. When you’re there every day and you see those medically intensive situations, it really makes you want to take good care of your family in any way you can,” the father said.

He met Rob Nicholson, owner of the Marketplace Café since its opening in October 2016 during the production of The Producers at the Holland Theatre, where both had roles in the cast.

Holycross, a lifelong resident of Logan County and 2012 graduate of Benjamin Logan High School, was working at the time at Dublin Methodist Hospital where he saw the importance of healthy food choices while his wife, Debbie, 26, is director of Logan County’s Family Children First Council and helps children and families deal with health and social issues. They have two children of their own, Ruby, 5, and Juniper, now 18 months old.

Nicholson, who is looking to open a new restaurant in downtown, was looking to sell the Marketplace Café, which is located in the 130 S. Main St. Main Street Marketplace, at the time and the Rushsylvania family seemed to fit the bill perfectly.

“This restaurant was built on offering people healthy food options and doing well in the community. Jacob and Debbie’s professional experience, personal lives, and their life’s passions personify exactly what I was building with the restaurant. I’m very confident they will continue to preserve and improve on this restaurant,” Nicholson said.

Changes to the café will be subtle.
