CoreLife Eatery, an "active lifestyle" restaurant offering a variety of greens, grains and broth-based dishes, opened in Indianapolis on Friday, but its first order of business was to make a difference instead of a profit.
The restaurant at 4335 E. 82nd St. (next to Fresh Thyme) invited diners to come in Thursday for a pre-opening "pay what you choose" meal. All proceeds were donated to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief.
“I’m from an area in upstate New York that was rocked by catastrophic flooding in 2011," CoreLife CEO Larry Wilson said in a news release. "I’ve seen firsthand how a natural disaster can devastate a community. We want to do whatever we can to help them recover and rebuild.”
Indianapolis manager Pam Healy told IndyStar on Saturday that the restaurant raised $5,424 for victims of Harvey and Irma during the event.
The few people who opted to pay nothing for their food were offset by more generous diners, who rounded up on what a typical meal price would have been, Healy said. Entrees start at about $6.

"People are loving the food," she said, adding that the local restaurant already has a five-star rating on Yelp. "We're filling a need here in Indy."
CoreLife Eatery, open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., offers a variety of fresh ingredients that are transformed into custom-created dishes. All food is free of trans fats, artificial colors, sweeteners, other artificial additives and GMOs.
“It’s a common misconception that healthy food can’t possibly taste good. We’re debunking that myth,” said Todd Mansfield, CoreLife partner.
The restaurant, which launched in 2015, plans to expand to 300 locations nationwide over the next five years. Indianapolis franchise owner Melissa Rohwer has announced plans to open six more stores in Indianapolis, two in Fort Wayne and one in Lafayette within five years.
